Loleatta Holloway muore a 64 anni

Addio alla cantante Statunitense Loleatta Holloway, meglio conosciuta per la sua voce che fu campionata dai Black Box nel 1989 con la hit Ride On Time, è morta all'età di 64 anni.

La cantante è morta d'infarto, il suo manager Ron Richardson ha confermato alla BBC.

Ha fatto complessivamente sei album e la sue hit furono "Only You" nel 1978 e Love Sensation nel 1980.

Quest'ultimo fu il brano che i Black Box campionarono per Ride On Time, che rimase numero uno nel Regno Unito per sei settimane.

La canzone venne citata in giudizio da Hollaway.

La sua voce fu rappresentata dalla modella Quinol Catherine, componente dei Black Box nel corso dei loro successo.

"Era una grande donna, forte, dura, ma allo stesso tempo era dolce", ha detto Richardson BBC 6 Music.

"Era anche molto fragile, purtroppo tanta gente questo non lo sapeva."

Singer Carol Williams, che era l'etichetta Salsoul Records con Holloway, ha detto che "è un suo diritto proclamarla come una delle più grandi voci del mondo".

"La maggior parte dei cantanti, quando registrano, cantano molto vicini al microfono, posando le loro labbra su di esso. Loleatta registrava tenendosi a metri di distanza dal microfono."

Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 1 DJ e co-fondatore dell'etichetta Acid Jazz, ha detto a 6 Music che la sua canzone preferita era Holloway and Run.

"L'anima, l'emozione, la disco - tutto ciò che riguarda Loleatta Holloway è in quell'unica canzone" ha detto.

Holloway lascia quattro figli e nove nipoti.

Il funerale si terrà privatamente per la famiglia e per il pubblico ci sarà un memoriale presso la chiesa Rev Jesse Jackson a Chicago.

Cantante prettamente soul, è divenuta nel corso degli anni una delle regine della disco music.

Aiutata dalla sua voce acuta e potente, ha sviluppato le proprie capacità canore nei cori gospel delle comunità religiose di Chicago, cantando con la mamma nella Halloway Community Singers e con Albertina Walker nel gruppo gospel The Caravans. Ed è proprio lì che viene notata e scritturata per il musical Don't Bother Me; I Can't Cope.

Dopo alcune tournée, si lega al suo produttore e futuro marito Floyd Smith: con la sua etichetta discografica (la Aware) registra gli album Loleatta (1973) e Cry To Me (1975).

Dopo la chiusura della Aware, nel 1976 la Holloway si lega al produttore Norman Harris ed alla sua etichetta Gold Mind Records, con la quale pubblicherà quattro album (l'ultimo nel 1980).

Divenuta già leggenda del mondo della disco music, nel 1979 la Holloway incide una delle canzoni che più sono entrate nella storia di tale genere: Love Sensation (scritta da Dan Hartman) che ha raggiunto la vetta della Hot Dance Club Play, e la posizione #5 della UK Dance Chart. Altre storiche canzoni incise dalla Holloway sono: Hit and Run (#3 US dance), Crash Goes Love (#5 US Dance), What Goes Around Comes Around, Strong Enough (mixata da Larry Levan), Dreamin (#1 Hot Dance Club Play).
